Packing Slip Template

A packing slip goes inside the box so the receiver can check the contents against their order. It lists items and quantities shipped — not prices — and flags anything backordered. This template gives warehouse and ecommerce teams a clean checklist that reduces returns and 'missing item' tickets.

How to fill in each field

Ordered vs in box

Show quantity ordered and quantity actually packed so the customer can check.

Common mistake: Listing only what's shipped, hiding partial/split shipments.

Order reference

Include the order number so the box matches the order and any invoice.

Common mistake: No order number, making support and returns harder.

No prices

Leave prices off — packing slips list contents, not charges (gifts especially).

Common mistake: Printing prices, awkward for gift shipments and B2B drop-ships.

Backorder notes

Flag items to follow so the customer knows more is coming.

Common mistake: No note on split shipments, triggering 'missing item' complaints.

Frequently asked questions

What should a packing slip include?+

The sender and recipient, a packing slip and order number, the ship date, items with quantities ordered and packed, and notes on any items to follow. It does not include prices.

What is the difference between a packing slip and an invoice?+

A packing slip lists the physical contents of a shipment (no prices) and goes in the box; an invoice requests payment and shows prices and tax. They share the order reference.

Is a packing slip the same as a delivery note?+

They overlap. A packing slip focuses on what's inside a package; a delivery note is signed on receipt as proof of delivery. Small businesses sometimes combine them.
